'Time to close sexual inequality gap'
In her regular Evening Post column, Deborah Morris refers to Statistics New Zealand data that has shown women's average ordinary time weekly earnings dropped 2.4% when compared to men. This has also occurred within a space of one year. Seen as a way of measuring women's economic status within society, this article provides a timely update about the situation faced by New Zealand women.

Women lag in pay race says MP
In a paper presented to the 2001 Women's Studies Association Conference, Alliance MP Dr Liz Gordon says that pay equity has stalled in both the private and public sectors. In fact, the pay gap between men and women in the public sector is widening with women's average wages being less than 80% of men's average wages compared to 83% in 1990.
"It's very disappointing," Dr Gordon said. "The pay gap in the state sector averages about $13,000 a year." Despite growing numbers of women graduates, there is still a negative pay gap for women. Dr Gordon believes that her paper shows the necessity for pay equity legislation and has drawn up a private member's bill to widen the definitions of equal employment opportunities in the State Sector Act to include pay equity.
