The Pay Gap in New Zealand
Thirty years after New Zealand's first equal pay laws:
- Men earn more (19.8%) than women
- Women make up 59% of public sector jobs and 44.3% of private sector jobs
- Women make up 51.2% of the workforce in smaller firms
- The earnings gap is lower in smaller firms at 15.8% than in larger firms at 19.9%
- Women tend to predominate in industries with a wide gender earning gap
- People in government, finance and business sectors earn more than those in shops, restaurants and blue collar industries
- Since 1989 average total ordinary time earnings increased by 30%. Increases were highest in the finance sector (70%) and utilities (74%). By contrast the hospitality sector (cafes, hotels) was just 22% and the retail sector 28%.
