Pay equity statements made by various political parties leading up to the 2002 General Election
Green Party
- affirms that women should receive equal pay for work of equal value
- will work to eliminate the gender pay gap by establishing a Pay Equity Commission and requiring state sector employers to undertake pay audits and job evaluations of all occupations within five years
Labour Party
- established an EEO Commissioner in the Human Rights Commission to provide advice and leadership on EEO, including pay equity
- will develop a programme to promote equal pay for work of equal value
- introduce measures to address the gap between male and female wage rates
National Party
- is opposed to a 'one-size-fits-all' attitude to pay equity
- will encourage voluntary implementation of EEO, including equal pay for performance of the same work by individuals in the same enterprise with the same skills and expertise
